September 2014 About climate at the market

A day at the Market with a “Wicked problem”

21-9-2014.

“Wicked problem” is a phrase used to describe a problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_problem)

Global warming has aspects of being a wicked problem. Leaders give scant information to the public about what global warming means because the science is complex, as is the nature of biological life and climate systems on our planet, and can’t be spoken about briefly in 3 word slogans.

Yes, the PM is correct, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is an invisible gas, but don’t jump to think that it can be ignored. It is a key chemical in the Carbon cycle upon which life on the planet depends. Most of us, our leaders included might hope global warming would go away and that “business as usual” would continue to reward the nation with the “good life” my generation have always enjoyed in Australia.

Last Sunday at the Talbot market, began early for GSG members but a frosty morning turned into a wonderful calm sunny day of shopping midst lots of interesting stalls. Many people attended the market, out and about to enjoy the “good life” at Talbot.  What a drag to have a stall on heavy stuff like Climate change “wickedness”. Australians would have heard enough about other sorts of wickedness that week. Why had we decided to present people with this problem?

Figure 1 WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Here is why!!

Last Year, UN  Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited world leaders to a climate summit for Sept 23rd  2014 for the purpose:

At the summit, more than 120 Heads of State and Government are expected to announce their visions and commitments for reaching a universal and meaningful climate agreement in 2015, as well as make announcements on actions that will reduce emissions, enhance resistance to climate change and mobilize financing for climate action..

Sept 21st was a day worldwide for raising awareness of the need to ensure nations each pull their weight to address the global warming problem at this meeting in New York.  Australia’s Foreign Minister will attend the climate meeting. The PM will be in New York also, but at another meeting he thinks important. And the Minister for Environment will he be there ?
