July 2014 – How Climate Change is Changing Everything

Our July event was a presentation by Terry White, a long serving member of the Goldfields Sustainability Group. A small group gathered on Saturday 26th July at the Community Hub in Maryborough to hear Terry speak about climate change.

From 2000 until 2010, Terry worked with local governments and businesses to develop practical and profitable responses to climate change through the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance and the Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action. Terry explained the projects he was involved in with these groups and how they were able to make real and lasting changes within many organisations such as councils and schools.

In June 2014, Terry was one of 500 Climate Reality leaders from around the world who was trained in Melbourne by Al Gore and a panel of experts to communicate the reality of climate change prior to the next United Nations Climate Conference in Paris in 2015. The Climate Reality Project Australia (formerly The Climate Project), the Australian branch of Al Gore’s climate change leadership program, is a non-profit organisation founded in November 2006. TCRP’s mission is to educate the public about the harmful effects of climate change and to work toward solutions at a grassroots level worldwide.

Terry outlined practical solutions that we can implement as consumers of energy and food. He shared his personal experience of completing an energy audit of his home and how he made changes to his lifestyle and practices at home to reduce his CO2 emissions and consume less. It was an inspirational presentation, and sparked much discussion among those present.

DSC_0202[1]The afternoon was also the Annual General Meeting for the GSG. Richard King, the 2013/2014 president opened the meeting with a retrospective of the year 2013/2014, and outlined the events and projects that we have been involved in.

Richard was thanked as outgoing president and his contribution to the group as president for the past two years were acknowledged. The olive oil that we pressed from the olives in June was also distributed to the pickers at the end of the AGM.
